PULLMAN, Wash. —  We are now just a week away from the start of the college football season, and for Washington State Cougars, they wrapped up their final day of training camp early Saturday morning with a final scrimmage.  A lot has been made over the last month about how the team is going to look similar, but different to previous seasons with the implementation of the “Coug Raid”.  A branch of the more well known, Mike Leach Air Raid, which which was used in Pullman for 8 seasons.

On Saturday, we got an idea of what this offense is going to look like in real action. On the first teams, second drive of the game Cam Ward led them right down the field going with extremely fast tempo, finding a few of his favorite receivers along the way, connecting with Lincoln victor and De’Zhaun Stribling, both guys who stood out to the coach staff during camp.  Then to cap it off, Ward found 7th year man Renard Bell in the endzone for the score.  As that was the most efficient drive of the game and Head Coach Jake Dickert said after, too expect a lot of that this upcoming season.

“I think it’s one of those things that we’re going to be able to play at any speed and cam navigates it so well and to keep defenses off balance, I think it’s an element to the game that I’m excited that we added to the program. So we’re going to use it, but at the same time when we get hopefully leads in the 4th quarter we can slow it down and pound the football. That’s why this offense is here so I’m excited about how they’re operating it because we did have some procedural penalties and stuff going fast that we got to clean up, but at the end of the day I think it’s got to be a valuable part of our offense.” said Dickert.

Washington State will open up their season at home against the Idaho Vandals from the Big Sky Conference on September 3rd.
