SPOKANE, Wash – Spokane firefighters responding to a house fire on West Grace early Thursday morning found a man dead in the home’s front room.
Firefighters responded to the call around 2:20 Wednesday in the 1300 Block of West Grace. That’s a few blocks east of North Maple in the Emerson-Garfield neighborhood.
Chief Brian Schaeffer said neighbors called in the fire and when fire crews arrived, there were flames as high as 50 feet shooting from the home.
They found the man dead just inside the front door.
Crews searched the rest of the home and found no one else inside.
Chief Schaeffer said if conditions were different, this fire could have been even worse.
“If this was in July with 20 mile per hour winds, it could have [spread to the] whole block,” Schaeffer said. “But we already had crews out. We were dealing with several critical calls, so it was an exceptionally busy night for us.”
It’s not clear yet what caused the fire and if there were working smoke detectors in the home.
Fire crews will likely be on the scene for several more hours.
