SPOKANE, Wash. – Gas prices hit an all-time high in both Washington and Idaho as well as the rest of the country.

Families are sure feeling that pain as AAA says gas prices climbed 20 cents in the last two weeks nationwide.

AAA says the current nationwide average for a gallon of regular gas hit $4.37. Compared to a month ago, the average gas price nationally was $4.11. A year ago, gas cost nearly $3.

Both Washington and Idaho hit record highs with Washington’s average at $4.87. In Idaho, it’s 40 cents lower at $4.48.

Spokane mom Sarah Langhjelm says she struggles from time to time with the gas prices growing higher, as well as inflation for everything else. Langhjelm says she used to pay $25 to fill up her Toyota sedan. It now costs nearly $50.

“Right now, I’m only putting $7 in my tank because I’m in between paydays and I don’t know what else to do,” she said. “It’s going to cripple this country with the way they’re taking us,” she said.

Langhjelm says she’s an assistant manager at McDonald’s, making decent money but still struggling to afford to pay for gas sometimes. She says being in the middle class, it’s “hard to keep up.”

“With bills, groceries and trying to live day to day, it’s one of those things in the back of my mind now that, ‘Great, can I not afford gas to work, do I have to take the bus to and from?’ I work across town from where I live. It is a struggle, and I worry about it every single day,” she said.

Jacob Smith, another Spokane resident, says it costs him about $90 to fill up his truck. While he doesn’t like it, he’ll have to deal with it.

“Gas prices are something that, you know, we have no control over and we’ve got to get where we’re going from point a to point b, and we’ve got to pay it regardless of what the price is,” he said.
